From Coach Herrmann:
Boyne City High School cross country kicked off their 2020-2021 season with strong finishes at the Lake Michigan Conference jamboree meet held in East Jordan. The girls' team took first place out of four teams, and the boys finished third out of six.
For the boys, senior Gavin Carson had an outstanding race and led the team, running a career personal best time of 17:51 and finishing sixth. He put in a ton of mileage this summer and has been giving 100% effort at every practice. It was so awesome to see his hard work pay off, and he learned a lot about race strategy that I know he will build on. We also had several newcomers on the boys team put in some really impressive finishes, and I'm excited to see how they develop and improve over the course of the season.
The girls' team was led by sophomore Ava Maginity, coming off an all-state freshman season and winning the race in a time of 20:38. Sophomores Reagan Woodall and Rachel Clausen had great races, making big contributions as brand-new runners, and we had several veteran runners work through some pain to help out our team. It was awesome to see groups of runners work together to move up and finish strong.
This was an exciting start to the season, and we are just grateful to be able to have a season at this point. We learned a lot today and have some things to build on moving forward. Each race is a gift this year, and we plan to make the most of each one.
Boyne City's next meet is home at Boyne Mountain for another Lake Michigan Conference jamboree on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
